Colouring and finishing a leather project: the steps

Most Fiebing's products follow a set order: prepare first, then dye, then seal. On the Antique Leather Stain product page, for example, it's explicitly recommended to apply a Resolene finish after staining.

1. Preparing

Deglazer is a solvent-based product that removes existing finishes from the leather surface, a preparation step before dyeing or refinishing.

2. Colouring

Pro Dye is an alcohol-based dye developed specifically for undyed, vegetable-tanned and bag/case leather. Antique Leather Stain and Vintage Gel give leather an antique or vintage look instead; the stain is liquid, the gel thicker and easier to apply in a targeted way. Pro Resist is applied to edges, cuts and grooves before dyeing, creating more contrast between the details and the rest of the leather.

3. Finishing and sealing

Resolene is a flexible, water-resistant acrylic top finish with a medium to high sheen, suitable for dyed, antiqued or burnished leather. Pro Resist also works as a top finish, resistant to moisture, sun and dirt. Edge Kote is specifically for colouring and finishing leather edges, usually applied with an edge slicker.

4. Gluing

Leathercraft Cement is a non-flammable, non-toxic, fast-drying glue that works on a range of leather types.

Fiebing's products are made in the United States.
